Thanks to advances in food production, fortification, and distribution, once-common maladies like low bodyweight, rickets, and anemia are now rare. Privatizing food service in public schools offered a way for districts to satisfy USDA requirements while also cutting costs. Schools spend money to feed children, and the federal government reimburses them based upon the neediness of the children served. As the decade continued, new motivations emerged for supporting a school lunch program with joint state and federal funding. The recipes at PeanutsinSchools.

It also explains the new food plate which replaced the food pyramid. Instead of a national food fight, with agricultural interests fighting for plate space, America would have a basic food-support system for children that respects local dietary diversity but encourages schools to achieve higher nutritional standards. Department of Agriculture USDA provided a substantial amount of guidance and training to help with implementation of the lunch changes and program oversight, but certain aspects of USDA's guidance may hinder state oversight of compliance. The experiment proved successful, and the following year lunch services were extended to the Southern Manual Training School and later to three additional units.

Millions of Americans lost their jobs; children nationwide began suffering the effects of insufficient food, including malnutrition and leg-bowing rickets. Recruits in large numbers were disqualified for service because of pellagra and other afflictions from inadequate diets. Supported by the new field of nutrition science, which sought to standardize diets and expose the dangers of malnourishment, Progressive reformers maintained that a "full belly" contributed to a more positive learning environment in schools. World War II led the program to grow even further. Also, the portions must now be larger. Richard B.
